Physiologisch gesehen haben viele Tierarten die Voraussetzung, Trauer zu empfinden, denn auch sie haben ein limbisches System, was im menschlichen Gehirn als Sitz der Gefühle angenommen wird. One of the main reasons for neutering exotic pet mammals is to control reproduction. Medical and behavioral indications are also important factors to consider in making a decision to have a pet neutered. In most species, castration makes male mammals less aggressive both to other animals and to their owners. The urine of many intact male mammals has a more potent odor and is used for territorial marking. The odor and behavior can often be modified by neutering. In many species, mammary neoplasia is influenced by the presence of hormones and ovariectomy can decrease the occurrence of mammary cancer. Ovarian and uterine diseases are effectively prevented by either ovariectomy or ovariohysterectomy.

Liverpool Üniversitesinde Felsefe anabilim dalinda calisan Filosof Professor Stephen L Clark; Singer, Ryder gibi bilim adamlarinin üyesi oldugu „ Oxford – Grubu“ `nun „modern hayvan etigi“ konusundaki calismalarinda ortaya koydugu düsünceleri ile uluslararasi alanda kendisini kabul ettirmis etkin bir bilim adami ve sayisiz bilimsel makalesi ve kitabi ile hayvan koruma alaninda özellikle „gereksiz aci cekme“ tanimlamasini sorgulayan ve sorgulatan bir isim. Holistik durusu ile insanlarin ahlaki yükümlülüklerinin bireylerden ziyade bir bütün olarak dogaya karsi ortaya konulmasi (Gaia) gerektigini savunan bilim adami hayvan haklari alaninda önemli cikislara öncülük etmektedir. Özellikle „Animals and their Moral Standing” adli kitabi bu alanda önemli paratigmalar ortaya koymaktadir.
